This is an Edlund no. 1 Can opener.  It is made for cans up to 11 inches tall. The knife is sharp; the handle turns easily, although the top knob has a gouge out of it (please see pic).

Everything works just fine. This item was used by a long time outdoor guide who made pack trips into the wilderness.

There is no base. The former owner told me that it is just more convenient to take the opener to the can instead of the other way round. Just slam the opener into the top of the can and go to work!
